How Irish Lotto works

Irish Lotto is the main lotto game run by the National Lottery in Ireland. Each line consists of six different numbers chosen from 1 to 47. Draws are held every Wednesday and Saturday.

In each draw, six main numbers are drawn first. A seventh ball, the bonus number, is then drawn from the 41 numbers that remain. You do not pick a bonus number yourself. Instead, if one of your six numbers matches the bonus ball, it can move you into a higher prize tier when you have also matched some of the main numbers. The jackpot itself only needs the six main numbers.

Where the jackpot odds come from

The jackpot odds are simply the number of different lines that can be played. The question is: how many different groups of six can be made from 47 numbers, when the order does not matter?

The answer is 10,737,573. You can think of it like this: there are 47 choices for the first number, 46 for the second, and so on down to 42 for the sixth. Multiplying those gives a huge figure, but because the same six numbers can be picked in 720 different orders and order does not matter, you divide by 720. What remains is 10,737,573 distinct lines, and exactly one of them matches the draw. So one line has a 1 in 10,737,573 chance of winning the jackpot.

Irish Lotto odds for each prize tier

The odds for a single line are:

  • Match 6: 1 in 10,737,573
  • Match 5 + bonus: 1 in 1,789,596
  • Match 5: 1 in 44,740
  • Match 4 + bonus: 1 in 17,896
  • Match 4: 1 in 918
  • Match 3 + bonus: 1 in 688
  • Match 3: 1 in 54.34
  • Match 2 + bonus: 1 in 72.45
  • Any of these tiers: 1 in 28.71

The bonus tiers can look strange at first. Match 2 + bonus is rarer than match 3, for example, because it needs a specific extra event: one of your other four numbers has to be the single bonus ball drawn from the 41 leftovers.

What these numbers mean in plain language

A 1 in 10,737,573 chance is still very small. If you played one line in every draw, twice a week, you would expect to wait around 100,000 years on average before matching all six. Another way to picture it: imagine 10.7 million tickets in a giant drum, each with a different line, and only one of them is the winner.

The lower tiers are a different story. Matching any of the listed tiers happens roughly once in every 29 lines, so small wins are far more common than the headline jackpot odds suggest.

How Irish Lotto compares with UK Lotto

The size of the number pool has a big effect on the odds. UK Lotto asks players to choose six numbers from 1 to 59, which gives 45,057,474 possible lines. Irish Lotto uses only 47 numbers, giving 10,737,573 possible lines.

That means the Irish Lotto jackpot is about 4.2 times easier to win per line than the UK Lotto jackpot. Twelve extra numbers may not sound like much, but every additional ball multiplies the number of possible combinations, which is why lotteries with larger pools have much longer jackpot odds. Neither game is better in an absolute sense, since prize structures differ too, but in terms of pure jackpot odds the smaller pool is clearly more favourable.

Why no strategy changes your odds

Every Irish Lotto draw is independent. The balls have no memory, so a number drawn last week is no more likely to appear again, and a number that has not come up for months is not due. Expecting the results to balance out in the short term is known as the gambler's fallacy.

That means hot and cold number lists, frequency charts, wheeling patterns and lucky numbers cannot improve your chance of winning. A line of 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 has exactly the same 1 in 10,737,573 chance as any other line.

The only thing your choice can influence is how many other people share your numbers. Lines based on birthdays, dates or neat shapes on the playslip are chosen by many players, so a win on those lines is more likely to be split. A random line, for example one from our random number generator, avoids those habits and may reduce the chance of sharing a prize. It does not change the odds of winning.

Play responsibly

The legal age to play the lottery varies by country, so make sure you meet the rules where you live. Set a budget you are comfortable with before you play and do not chase losses. Treat Irish Lotto as entertainment rather than a source of income. For current rules, prize tiers and results, always check the official publications of the National Lottery in Ireland.
