Lotto Max Odds Explained

Since April 2026, the odds of matching all seven Lotto Max numbers with a single line are 1 in 133,784,560. This guide explains where that figure comes from, how likely the smaller matches are and how the change from 50 to 52 numbers affected the odds.

How Lotto Max works

Lotto Max is a national lottery game in Canada. Since the change in April 2026, each line consists of seven different numbers chosen from 1 to 52. Draws are held every Tuesday and Friday.

In each draw, seven winning numbers are drawn, followed by a bonus number taken from the balls that remain. You do not choose a bonus number yourself; it is used to separate some of the prize tiers. Each purchased line also comes with additional quick-pick lines, so one play gives you more than one combination. All the odds in this guide are for a single line.

Where the jackpot odds come from

The jackpot odds are the number of different seven-number lines that can be made from 52 numbers, when the order does not matter.

Think of it step by step. There are 52 choices for the first number, 51 for the second, and so on down to 46 for the seventh. Multiplying these gives the number of ordered sequences. But any set of seven numbers can be arranged in 5,040 different orders, and the order does not matter on your ticket, so you divide by 5,040. The result is 133,784,560 distinct lines. Only one of them matches all seven winning numbers, so a single line has a 1 in 133,784,560 chance of hitting the jackpot.

Lotto Max odds per line

The odds of matching with a single line are:

  • 7 numbers: 1 in 133,784,560
  • 6 numbers + bonus: 1 in 19,112,080
  • 6 numbers: 1 in 434,365
  • 5 numbers + bonus: 1 in 144,788
  • 5 numbers: 1 in 6,734
  • 4 numbers + bonus: 1 in 4,041
  • 4 numbers: 1 in 289
  • 3 numbers + bonus: 1 in 289
  • 3 numbers: 1 in 28.16

These figures describe how likely each match is for one line. Which matches pay, and how prizes are set, is decided by the operator's prize table, which was changed in 2026. Always check the current official version.

What these numbers mean in plain language

A 1 in 133,784,560 chance is extremely small. If you played one line in every draw, twice a week, you would expect to wait well over a million years on average before matching all seven numbers. Another way to see it: the Lotto Max jackpot is now nearly ten times harder per line than matching all six numbers in a classic 6 from 49 game, where the odds are 1 in 13,983,816.

The smallest matches are far more common. Matching three numbers happens about once in every 28 lines. Because each play includes additional lines, a single purchase covers several combinations, but each of those lines still faces exactly the same per-line odds.

What changed in April 2026

Before April 2026, Lotto Max players chose seven numbers from 1 to 50. That format had 99,884,400 possible lines, so the per-line jackpot odds were 1 in 99,884,400.

Adding just two more numbers to the pool increased the number of possible lines to 133,784,560. That is about 1.34 times as many combinations, which means the per-line jackpot odds became roughly a third harder. The extra balls also changed the odds of the smaller matches, and the operator updated the prize table at the same time. If you remember older odds figures for Lotto Max, they no longer apply to the current game.

This is a good example of how sensitive lottery odds are to the size of the pool. Each additional number does not just add a few combinations; it multiplies the total, because it can be combined with every possible group of the other numbers.

Why no strategy changes your odds

Every Lotto Max draw is independent. The balls have no memory, so a number that was drawn last week is not more likely to appear again, and a number that has been missing for a while is not due. Expecting results to even out in the short term is known as the gambler's fallacy.

This means hot and cold number lists, frequency charts, number wheels and lucky numbers cannot improve your chance of winning. A line such as 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 has exactly the same 1 in 133,784,560 chance as any other.

The only thing your choice can influence is how many other players share your numbers. Lines built from birthdays, which only go up to 31, or from neat patterns on the selection slip are chosen by many people, so a win on those lines is more likely to be split. A random line, for example one from our random number generator, avoids those habits and may reduce the chance of sharing a prize. It does not make winning more likely.

Play responsibly

The legal age to buy lottery tickets varies by province, so check the rules where you live. Set a budget before you play and stick to it, whatever the result. Treat Lotto Max as entertainment, not as a source of income or a way to solve money problems. For the current rules, prize table and results, always check the official publications of your provincial lottery.
